Laudatio Wollita-Preis 2012 für Christine Sun Kim

How do new artistic genres come about? In one of her performances Christine Sun Kim conducts a choir of friends. Christine Sun Kim holds up an iPad displaying hand gestures for the choir conductor to see. The face of the signer is not shown. Yet it is the visual details of the face in motion, such as the mouth, the eyes and the facial expressions, that work together with the hand gestures to bring sign language to life. In her performance the conductor of the choir assumes the task of providing the facial performance whereas the members of the choir, who can see only the face of the conductor, mimic the expressions they see: a new genre is born: the Face Opera. Also in her work with sound and music Christine Sun Kim opens up new spaces. She tries, so she told me in an interview, to think of using sound as a vehicle to bring people to a different perspective. It is one approach, I think.” Exactly this combination of openness and  concept, that produces a complex and multilayered art, is what convinced the jury of the Wollita-Award. The Wollita Award supports persons, institutions, and works that generate new spaces in art, culture, and even life. It is my pleasure to present Christine Sun Kim the Wollita-Award 2012!

Wie entstehen eigentlich neue Genres in der Kunst? In einer Performance dirigiert die New Yorker Künstlerin Christine Sun Kim einem Chor von Freunden. Sie zeigt dem Chorleiter ein Ipad, auf welchem Handgebärden zu sehen sind. Das dazu gehörende Gesicht wird nicht gezeigt. Es sind jedoch die Details des Gesichts in Bewegung, die Bewegung von Mund, Augen, die Mimik, welche im Zusammenwirken mit den Handgebärden Gebärdensprache entstehen lassen. In ihrer Performance übernimmt der Chorleiter die Aufgabe, die Gesichtsperformance zu ergänzen. Der Chor, der ausschließlich das Gesicht des Chorleiters sieht, formt es mimetisch nach: ein neues künstlerisches Genre entsteht: Die Face Opera. Auch in ihrer Arbeit mit Klang und Musik schließt Christine Sun Kim neue Räume auf. Sie probiert, so erzählte die Künstlerin mir in einem Interview "Klang als Vehikel zu gebrauchen, um Leute in eine andere Perspektive zu bringen. Das ist eine der möglichen Herangehensweisen, meine ich." Genau diese Kombination zwischen Offenheit und Konzept, die bei ihr eine vielschichtige Kunst hervorbringt, hat die Jury der Wollita Kulturpreis überzeugt. Der Wollita-Kulturpreis fördert Persönlichkeiten, Werke und Institutionen, die Räume schaffen für neue Qualitäten in Kunst, Kultur, sogar im Leben. Es ist mir große Freude, die Wollita-Kulturpreis 2012 an Christine Sun Kim zu überreichen!
